Thanks for checking out Wisconsin’s firewood resources page and for helping reduce the spread of invasive pests that can travel on firewood!
Firewood movement rules can be a complicated mix of quarantine regulations and other rules and policies. When in doubt contact Wisconsin’s firewood program coordinator, but the following ‘best practices’ should help you avoid most firewood movement issues:
- When visiting State Parks, Forests or other state properties make sure your firewood is either DATCP certified or from within 10 miles of the property.
- When visiting National Forests make sure your firewood is either certified or from within 25 miles of the property.
- If you’re moving uncertified firewood from one county to another make sure you’re not leaving the spongy moth (formerly gypsy moth) quarantine. Find additional information by clicking the Spongy Moth link on PLANTPESTS.WI.GOV
- Private campgrounds may have their own rules about bringing in firewood so be sure to check with them before leaving home.
- Use FIREWOODSCOUT.ORG to find local firewood and call ahead to ensure availability.
- Buy it where you burn it!
