The state of New Hampshire prohibits the entry of out-of-state firewood unless it has been certified heat-treated to 140° F (60° C) for 60 minutes and is clearly labeled with the name and address of the federal or state approved production facility. This out-of-state firewood quarantine is in place to protect New Hampshire’s forest resources from harmful tree pests such as the Asian long-horned beetleemerald ash boreroak wiltand spotted lanternfly. These and other invasive pests often spread to new areas by hitchhiking on firewood.

Authorities in New Hampshire take the risks of spreading invasive tree pests seriously, so if you transport firewood within the state, be sure to have a receipt or other proof of origin to show law enforcement. To protect New Hampshire’s forests, it is always best practice to buy firewood where you will burn it

Many nearby states (e.g., CTMENYVT) have similar regulations prohibiting or restricting the lawful movement of firewood, so be sure to learn the rules of your destination before taking firewood out of New Hampshire.
