Minnesota (MN) has the following firewood regulations to protect the state’s natural resources from tree-killing forest pests:
- MN prohibits the entry of uncertified firewood from states infested with mountain pine beetle
- Firewood cannot legally be taken out of Lake and Cook counties due to a spongy moth interior quarantine
- MN prohibits the entry of firewood from out of state as well as the counties within Minnesota that are infested with emerald ash borer
To protect forest health, Minnesota’s Department of Agriculture (MDA) and Department of Natural Resources urges the public to buy MDA certified firewood- it has been heat-treated and is safe to move within the state. Minnesota State Parks only allow MDA certified firewood or firewood purchased at the park. Also, Chippewa and Superior National Forests prohibit out-of-state firewood and recommend getting firewood from nearby sources. Private campgrounds often have their own firewood policies as well; be sure the find out the firewood rules before traveling with firewood.
