Firewood Recommendations for Michigan

Michigan has multiple quarantine areas. The movement of hardwood firewood within a given quarantine area is allowed, but movement between different quarantine areas is illegal in some, although not all, cases. Please consult the Michigan Firewood Fact Page for detailed information, including one-page handouts.

Citizens are strongly encouraged to buy and burn local firewood regardless of where they are located. Many out-of-state visitors to Michigan live in areas under quarantine for pests such as thousand cankers disease or Asian longhorned beetle, and it is illegal to move any regulated items (including items such as firewood and wood chips) from quarantined zones out of those states and into Michigan.

Firewood policies vary greatly among the National Parks, National Forests, private campgrounds, and other lands in Michigan. Please see the listing below or call ahead before visiting.

If you are a commercial firm interested in treatments for firewood to sell, please call the MDARD Customer Service Center at 1-800-292-3939 for more information.
